Statement on the death of Eric Harkness

LAWRENCE, KS (JULY 16, 2019) –  We recently learned of the death of Eric Harkness, president of the Kansas Mental Health Coalition, and the NAMI Kansas Board. Eric was a passionate mental health advocate and will be greatly missed. His voice as a consumer advocate and his conviction to provide comprehensive mental health services to all Kansans were such important strengths that he brought to the daily work of advocacy in Kansas. Headquarters, Inc. offers our condolences to Eric’s family, friends, and everyone touched by his work and spirit.

There is never only one reason for suicide. Suicide is the result of many factors such as mental health conditions, stress, life events, and access to lethal means. Suicide impacts all ages, all races, all genders, all ethnicities, and all socioeconomic classes. It does not discriminate.

We know that through education, compassion, means restriction, and professional intervention, suicide is preventable.
