A three-digit suicide prevention hotline number will soon make seeking emergency mental health help more like calling 911, federal regulators announced Thursday.
When the months-long process is completed, U.S. residents will be able to call 988 for help in a mental health emergency, just as 911 connects people in need to first-responders for other emergencies.

LAWRENCE, KS (JULY 16, 2019) – We recently learned of the death of Eric Harkness, president of the Kansas Mental Health Coalition, and the NAMI Kansas Board. Eric was a passionate mental health advocate and will be greatly missed. His voice as a consumer advocate and his conviction to provide comprehensive mental health services to all Kansans were such important strengths that he brought to the daily work of advocacy in Kansas.
